GiddyGiddyGoin asked:
Obviously, I KNOW the I.V. is a needle and oral is a pill, but what is the difference as far as effect? I have had IV sedation before and I was totally out. I will be getting oral medication next week. I am concerned I will feel/remember everything!! Anyone have input? Thanks!!
I am having 2 teeth pulled and some fillings done.
Am I going to FEEL anything?? I’m scared!!!

is this for surgery? many times the doc will order a mild oral sedative before going into surgery to relax you. once in the or, you are given the iv.
i forgot- it’s pretty much the same with either kind. i’ve had both. memory kind of comes and goes.

Well from what I have heard…You are awake with sedation, but you are “sedated” you wont remember hardly anything about it, but you will be responsive, I have considered this, I have a deep fear of dentists. I go next week to get my Wisdoms out plus 2 more, and I am getting the IV where I am out cold.
Good luck!!

Be aware “oral sedation” courses required to offer this route of sedation encompass 20 hours and consist of giving an outdated, non-FDA approved medication formerly used to treat insomnia. This “benzo” known as triazolam (brand name Halcion) offers NO PAIN RELIEF but in overdose allows for memory loss. YOU SHOULD BE AWAKE throughout the procedure for your safety because in all likelihood your dentist is not sufficiently trained to manage any complications associated with deeper levels of sedation. Oral sedation is essentially a marketing ploy to attract patients. Do yourself a favor and find someone appropriately trained to offer the type of sedation equated with 3rd molar extractions - this would be an oral surgeon or a dentist who has an anesthesiologist or oral surgeon come in to administer the sedation.

I agree with the above post, best analogy is “if someone only has a hammer, everything looks like a nail” - a dentist who utilizes all available resources to improve patient care likely employs teh same practice philosophy to their dental procedures. Get someone with an entire “tool belt” regarding anesthesia/sedation for BOTH your safety and your comfort
